“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Or look like crap. Today is another one of those busy days. Work. More work. Dishes. Laundry. And a text from The Hubbs saying his flight has been delayed and asking if I can get the bonus daughters to their sister’s swim meet tonight and he’ll meet me there. Which is all fine and dandy, but I hadn’t budgeted getting two of the girls fed and ready to go into my timeline today. Nor had I realized I’d be driving, instead of doing some research for the new house on my phone while riding to the meet. Needless to say, my original plan needed to be jostled around a bit.
But from where oh where can I steal time? Oh yeah, just like every other woman on the planet, from the stuff I typically do for myself. Like putting on makeup to look presentable. Normally, I’d spend about 25 minutes getting ready to head out the door. But I no longer have those 25 minutes today. So, plan B goes into action. For days just like this, I have a back up beauty routine that takes less than five minutes. No joke. So, if you have to shift plans, were up late and are trying to maximize your sleep or just hate spending all that time primping in the bathroom, I have a quick and easy routine for you. Ready? Here we go.
1. START WITH CLEAN AND MOISTURIZED FACE.
Make sure you’ve washed your face, put on your moisturizer and used an eye cream. Those there things are important and a must, even if you don’t have time for any makeup at all.
2. KEEP THE RIGHT TOOLS HANDY.
It’s a lot like your kitchen. There are the mandatory tools (think knives and spatulas) and then the “it’s nice to have these” tools (think apple corer or melon baller). I keep my mandatory make-up tools all in one place, so I don’t have to go digging for them when I’m in a hurry.
3. LAY THE FOUNDATION.
Unless you have really bad skin problems, a primer like FusionBeauty’s Prime Results Brightening Primer, or a pore refiner like Dr. Brandt’s Pores No More (with tint or without), should be enough coverage on the “I’ve got to get out of here quick days.” Yes, you can use a foundation brush, but we’re in a hurry here folks and fingers were created before brushes and work just fine to spread whichever you initial layer you choose.
4. COVER UP THE REALLY BAD SPOTS.
I have dark, puffy circles under my eyes all the time. So I need a concealer every day. I really like the Skinn by Dimitri James Brightening Concealer to hide those bad boys. And if I have a zit or two, the Jo Mousselli twist up concealer is great. If it’s a really ugly zit (or worse, like a hive) I go for my Benefit Boiing. It’s more of a paste and pretty hard core. No matter which, it’s a good idea to use a concealer brush, especially around those gentle eye areas. We tend to be a bit too heavy handed when it comes to using our fingers and concealer.
5. POWDER. POWDER. POWDER.
I’m a big believer in powder to set everything. It’s like using hairspray to keep your hair in place. And these days there are some pretty amazing powders out there, like this loose powder from MAC. It preps and primes for your blush and the finishing touches, which helping to cover up uneven tones. Am I gushing too much about this stuff? No? Good. Because I love it. A lot.
6. AM I BLUSHING?
I sure hope I am. Because without blush, I think my face looks faded and one dimensional. A little blush on the apples of the cheeks brightens up your whole face. You can use a powder, like this Armani blush that I use (I love the flecks of gold in it and it’s a great color on most anyone) or a liquid like the cult favorite Benefit Bentint and a cream blush works fine too. Fingers are fine for cream and liquid (work fast with the liquid and on one side at a time, so you don’t end up with streaks) but you’ll need a blush brush for the powder varieties.
7. A MUST HAVE IF YOU’RE SLEEP DEPRIVED. AND AREN’T WE ALL?
I never seem to get enough sleep. Well, that’s not true. Once, after I’d had major surgery and really good drugs that knocked me out for several days, I felt rested. But since then? No go. Seems like we’re all a bit sleep deprived. But a good highlighter can help fool everyone into thinking we got our 8 hours last night. Our skin can look a bit dull if we’re tired, so I sweep on this Candlelight powder by TooFaced all over my face with a big fluffy brush. It’s great at diffusing the “rough edges” and brightening up my skin. And a cream highlighter, like this one from E.L.F., dabbed on the inside corners of the eyes will make you look more awake. Same with a sweep of the Benefit HighBrow stick right under your eyebrows (be sure to blend it well with your fingertips). All three take just a few seconds to apply but can a make a big difference.
8. NO TIME FOR A SMOKEY EYE HERE.
The eyes are the window to the soul. Or so “they” say. Most women think they need to skip their eye makeup when they are in hurry. But I say no go. Having an eyeshadow quad that you love helps save time (no digging around for colors that work together). A quick sweep of an all over lid color, another sweep of a little darker color in the creases, and a smudge of a darker color still in the outside corner and under the lashes should do and takes only seconds. I have eyelash extensions, so I rarely use mascara, but again, it takes about 15 seconds to swipe some mascara across your top lashes and it can make a HUGE difference, especially if you have light colored lashes. And a little eye liner at the lash line on your eyelid can open things up. No need to perfect a cat-eye or liquid liner (which seems to sense fear in its users). Just a standard eye liner pencil works great. I love both the mascara and eye liner from Extreme Lash, since I know they’re formulated to work with my extensions and won’t hurt them. Oh and their eyeliner? It comes in a ton of colors and once it’s on, it’s on. It’s the best eyeliner I’ve ever found for staying put.
9. THE ICING ON THE CAKE
Last but not least, don’t forget your lips. Your lips are like your cheekbones. I feel that they totally disappear into your face if you don’t give them a little love. Smashbox’s O-Gloss is a lifesaver – it automatically adjusts to your skin to create a complimentary “no-brainer” sheer color. And the same goes for Jane Iredale’s Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain. I love the self adjusting products. I don’t have to think about them any further than putting them on.
And just like that you’re done. I finished all of that in four minutes and twenty-five seconds. For real. I wouldn’t say I’m ready to head out to a black tie, but to go to the office, grocery store or a swim meet? You bet!
I call this “every day” make up. Just enough to be presentable in public and to cover the major stuff. What do you guys do to get out the door quickly in the morning? Do you have a quick makeup routine that you love to help move things along. I’d love to hear about it. Or see a picture even! Tell me about it in the comments below. And as always. . . . you’re welcome
